What Happens During an Fertility Acupuncture Session at Pulling Down the Moon?

An acupuncture session at Pulling Down the Moon begins with a thorough discussion of your health history and identifying your current health concerns. You will then be invited to lie down on the treatment table. Your acupuncturist will insert tiny needles into the acupuncture points that affect fertility or other health concerns you may be experiencing. These points may be on your abdomen, but many times will be on other parts of the body as appropriate to your concerns. After inserting the needles, the acupuncturist may gently twirl them slightly to further stimulate these points. It is important to us that you feel comfortable during your entire experience, so please let your acupuncturist know if there is any particular area you prefer not to treat.

During this process, you may feel a tingling or pulsing sensation. You will lie in place for about 20-30 minutes as you relax. The needles will then be removed, and the treatment will be completed.

Because PDtM is a holistic facility, we work to balance all aspects of your body, mind, and spirit during each encounter. At the beginning of each visit, we will check in with you regarding your fertility journey, what you are experiencing physically, mentally, and emotionally, and then determine the best course of treatment based on the whole picture.

Acupuncture is a therapy. We hope that you feel great after every visit, but we expect that it will take multiple visits to arrive at your goals - whether that is getting pregnant, being out of pain, or just feeling more balanced. While treatment recommendations are tailored to each individual, it is common to expect an average of 1-3 visits per week.

Risks of Acupuncture for Fertility

Acupuncture is known for its very low risk of side effects. All Pulling Down the Moon acupuncturists are licensed by the State of Illinois and are certified by the National Certification Commission of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine and have extensive training in safe application of acupuncture and associated techniques. For this reason, they are able to make safe and effective choices for your care at any stage of the fertility and pregnancy journey.

Acupuncture, a time-honored practice, offers numerous benefits with very few side effects. Acupuncturists use single-use, pre-sterilized needles that they properly dispose of after each patient. Most clients don’t feel any discomfort from the needles, though there can be a temporary feeling of pain or tingling during insertion. Once the needles are placed, there may be a sensation of heaviness or tingling that comes and goes, but most often clients don’t feel anything at all at the sites during the session. Acupuncture is also safe during all stages of pregnancy, and many women find that it helps with some of their pregnancy symptoms, such as joint pain, nausea, fatigue or morning sickness.

Get to Know More About Acupuncture for Fertility

  • What is Acupuncture for Fertility?

Fertility acupuncture is centered on the regulation of energy pathways, sometimes called “meridians”, which flow throughout the body that are directly related to reproductive function that can stimulate the sympathetic nervous system to relieve stress and increase circulation. Acupuncture is known to increase blood flow to help enhance all functioning in the body including the thickening of the endometrial lining in the uterus to improve the odds of implantation.

In situations of heightened stress, the sympathetic nervous system can disrupt a crucial axis affecting reproductive health and restrict blood flow to the ovaries, both of which acupuncture has been demonstrated to inhibit these responses.

  • Acupuncture vs Acupuncture for Fertility?

Acupuncture has been in continuous usage around the globe for over 3,000 years. This Traditional Chinese Medicinal (TCM) treatment can aid in a wide range of health concerns, including fertility support. By improving the quality of the energy flowing through the body’s meridians, acupuncturists can improve the overall health, hormone regulation, and function of the body, increasing chances of conceiving. At Pulling Down the Moon, part of our goal is to help women and men make healthy lifestyle changes to increase their chances of conceiving through treatments like acupuncture for fertility.

Acupuncture treatment for fertility is the use of traditional acupuncture techniques to activate acupuncture points that target the reproductive organs. The goal is to encourage the body to regulate fertility hormones and increase blood flow to the reproductive organs, which increases the chances of successfully conceiving.

  • How Does Acupuncture Treat Pain?

For centuries Asian countries have turned to acupuncture therapy to relieve pain, but how does it work? Traditional Chinese medicine states that illness is the result of an unbalanced Qi. Acupuncture therapy helps restore that balance by bringing energy flow to the various meridians or pathways the Qui moves through.

Western medicine also supports the use of acupuncture for pain management. The reason why it works is less clear, though. Evidence suggests that inserting fine needles at specific acupoints stimulates the release of endorphins that act as the body’s natural painkiller. It is also possible the stimulation from the needles affects pain processing and increases blood flow to help you feel better.

  • What Tools Are Used in Acupuncture?

The leading tool is acupuncture needles. They are usually stainless steel, very thin and flexible. They may vary in size, as well.

    Other potential tools include:

    • Pressure studs
    • Magnets or magnetic wand
    • Cups
    • Heat lamp
    • Ear seeds
    • Electro-stimulation device
    • Moxibustion
    • Red Light Therapy

The modern acupuncturist may use many of these tools, some, or only practice with needles.

  • Do You Take Health Insurance?

Yes, please see our insurance & affordability options to see if you are covered.

  • When Should I Start Acupuncture if I’m Undergoing IUI/IVF or trying to conceive naturally?

The optimal time to start acupuncture varies based on individual circumstances. However, many experts recommend beginning acupuncture three to four months before attempting conception through IUI, IVF, or natural methods. This allows for potential improvements in egg quality, hormone regulation, and overall reproductive health. It's advisable to consult with a licensed acupuncturist who can provide personalized guidance based on your specific situation and fertility goals.
