They say it takes two to tango, so, why aren’t more men involved in the fertility process beyond, ahem, the obvious? Unfortunately, cultural norms and stigmas have kept many men from seeking evaluation and treatment for concerns relating to reproductive health. In addition, much of the research that exists regarding fertility has focused on the female, presumably because she is the one who carries the pregnancy.
However, for decades, studies have shown that when there are known infertility factors:
We offer a range of services for Fertility Support and Treatment for men.
Acupuncture has been a standard medical practice in Asia for thousands of years, and it is still a front-line therapy for nearly all health concerns in Asian countries today. As an integral part of Traditional Chinese Medicine, there have been numerous studies about acupuncture for male fertility over the years. Some of the exciting findings of various studies over the years demonstrate that acupuncture can improve sperm motility (movement), quality, and quantity. It also helps improve fertility hormones in men. Some studies also connected these sperm improvements to an increase in pregnancy rates.¹ One of the reasons that acupuncture may have these beneficial effects on men’s fertility is that it helps to reset and calm the nervous system and balance the body’s energy and hormones. Not only is that helpful for male reproductive health, but it can also help with other things like a more balanced immune system, natural pain relief, better circulation, improved sleep, and stress reduction, all of which can impact fertility.
This is another area where men often feel left out, but shouldn’t. Massage therapy is incredibly beneficial for boosting circulation, improving lymphatic flow, and balancing hormones, all of which have significant impacts on male fertility. One of the biggest things that massage does is help men relax during what can be a very stress-inducing time. The fertility journey comes with all kinds of emotional struggles that men often feel forced (unfortunately) to bury or ignore. Male fertility massage empowers men to embrace and face their emotions and celebrate themselves. All of this helps reduce levels of the stress hormone cortisol. All of this can actually improve energy and libido levels while improving healing sleep and, therefore, fertility.
Nutrition, acupuncture, and massage all work together to help balance every possible aspect of your health and fertility. This is why Pulling Down the Moon has created a truly comprehensive 12-week nutrition program for couples going through the fertility journey. All along the way, we cover every aspect of nutrition for male fertility and female fertility, and how those things work together to help couples achieve their dream of a healthy pregnancy. Our course is led by our registered dietician who will work with you individually and as a couple to cover all areas of nutrition, including supplements that can improve fertility. It’s not uncommon for men and women alike to worry about how acupuncture needles feel going in. Our acupuncturist uses one-time-use needles with a very fine gauge that is just a little thicker than a human hair (about 30–40 gauges, which is significantly thinner than hypodermic needles used for shots or blood draws). Most men are surprised by how comfortable acupuncture is. There is usually a slight prick, but after the needles are in, most report no needle sensation at all.
This depends on your answers to all the questions our acupuncturist will ask you. The specific acupuncture points correspond to the nervous system’s different functions for healing. So your acupuncture points may be different from the next guy's. But the good news is that he doesn’t put any needles… down there... if you take our meaning.
Again, this can vary widely depending on your specific needs. If you are having acupuncture for male fertility, our acupuncturist may recommend anywhere from one to three sessions a week for a couple of months, depending on where you and your partner are on your fertility journey.
Here at Pulling Down the Moon, our goal is to lower your stress levels with all of our holistic fertility services. During acupuncture, we will do everything to help you relax and feel comfortable. We also typically combine acupuncture along with other complementary therapies such as massage and nutrition to boost fertility for both men and women.
