They say it "takes 2 to tango." So, why aren't more men involved in the fertility process beyond, ahem, the obvious? Unfortunately, cultural norms and stigmas have kept many men from seeking evaluation and treatment for concerns relating to reproductive health. In addition, much of the research that exists regarding fertility has focused on the female, presumably because she is the one who carries the pregnancy. However, for decades, research has shown that when there are known infertility factors, 50% are male and 50% are female! Yes, exactly down the middle! So, what are we waiting for? Acupuncture is a great choice to help reduce stress, work to heal chronic issues such as back pain, allergies, etc, but did you know that it can also help to improve reproductive function in men as well as women?
As if the usual challenges weren't enough, COVID-19 also seems to be having an impact on men's reproductive health. In a research study published in Nov 2021, scientists at the University of Georgia found that COVID-19 infections can affect testicular function, cause testicular pain (orchitis), and possibly have an impact on hormone function and sperm quality. In another study published in July 2021, a research team found that sperm development is likely to be affected by a COVID-19 infection, especially in older men.
Acupuncture sessions calm and reset the nervous system, help to improve circulation, and balance hormones, all of which can help improve sperm health. Treatments are aimed at creating a comfortable environment and experience to help resolve symptoms by addressing their root causes. And no, there are no needles in "high voltage" areas (as my yoga teacher used to say).
